Dooars is the gateway to the wildlife zone of West Bengal and also the gateway to the hill of India and Bhutan. The word Dooars comes from the Bengali word `Duars’ meaning `Doors’ as it is situated in the Eastern Himalayan mountain range, it is magnificent hills and valleys, jungles, rivers, and tea plantations. The vast region acts as the doorway to the major Himalayan wildlife habitats it is home to many exotic species and rich in exquisite natural beauty major rivers like Teesta, Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsa, etc flow in these regions.

Gorumara National Park

Where you can witness some of the exotic wildlife animals like Indian bison, horned Rhinoceros, elephants, Leopards, deer, and wild boras including snakes like python, king cobra, etc. The National Park is also rich in flora and fauna here you can find verities of Sal, Shimul, bamboo groves, etc. Although there is no resident tiger here it can be spotted occasionally and there are different kind’s birds here including peacocks. The best time to visit Gorumara National Park starts from mid-September to December when the weather is pleasant and calm.

Jaldapara is located about 1 hour and 20 minutes drive from Murti towards its east. Jaldapara is well known for its Elephant safari to spot rhinos, bison, Gaurs different types of deer, etc. Tigers and leopards can be seen occasionally, The Elephant safari takes place from the gates of Hollong Lodge located 7km inside the Jungle. Jeep safari at Jaldapara are also popular, most tourist stays in and around the Madarihat near Hashimara. Visit Jaldapara National Park starts from mid-September onwards, the best time to visit the National park is in the Winter season time between November to March. The other season like in Monsoon and summer seasons are not quite the best time to visit because of the Hot and Humid weather conditions.

Buxa Tiger Reserve reportedly has the highest number of Tigers in West Bengal after Sunderban, but tiger spotting has become difficult in recent years. Orange and Cardamom plantation is the major livelihood of the villagers here. 5km from Samsing there is a small village Suntalekhola also known for its pristine natural beauty with Tea Gardens, forests, and orange plantation.

At Buxa Tiger Reserve you can enter through a place called Rajabhatkhawa and drive down to the Santalabari about 15km from Rajabhatkhawa through the forest then hike up to foothills for 3km and take a steep uphill trek to historical Buxa Fort 2.5km. The same goes beyond Lepchaka Village Further 2km ahead for a wonderful view of Dooars plains from a hilltop. The Uphill trail to Buxa Fort is the most popular trekking trail in Dooars.
